Room to Bloom Though Tariffs Loom: South Africa Eyes Trade Diversification, Minister Says
The government aims to diversify exports to Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, to strengthen global supply chains and economic resilience, Minister of Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said.
At the same time, Pretoria is hopeful "there is room to reach an agreement" with the US to review Trump's 30% tariff on goods from South Africa, she told media.
Ramaphosa personally called Trump to continue trade negotiations, reaffirming Pretoria's commitment to a constructive, sustainable agreement, the official stressed.
To de-risk the potential blow from a US tariff, the government is rolling out support:
🟠A special help desk for exporters to get guidance;
🟠A fund to help companies make more products locally;
🟠Financial support for businesses to keep running and maintain equipment;
🟠Working with the Department of Employment to mitigate potential job losses.
