Guinea-Bissau's President Appoints New PM Ahead of November's Elections
Umaro Sissoco Embalo appointed Braima Camara — former coordinator of the opposition Madem G15 party — as the country's new prime minister, the third one under Embalo's presidency since 2020.
Key election details:
Election date: presidential and legislative polls set for November 23 by a March presidential decree, earlier than the previously announced November 30.
Second term: Embalo in March reversed his earlier promise to step down, confirming he will run for a second five-year term, which Guinea-Bissau's constitution allows.
Mandate ruling: Supreme Court confirmed Embalo's term ends on September 4 — not in February, as the opposition demanded.
Opposition stance: over recent months, the opposition has reportedly refused to recognize Embalo as president, saying his term ended on February 27 — five years sharp after inauguration.
