Sputnik Shows Rare Visit Inside the Atomic Bomb Dome

On the eve of the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing, a Sputnik correspondent visited the interior of the "Atomic Bomb Dome," a UNESCO World Heritage site closed to the public and an enduring symbol of the nuclear catastrophe.

The correspondent was among 10 foreign journalists granted a rare permission to pass beyond the barriers into the carefully protected UNESCO World Heritage site.

Before the visit, a strict briefing outlined what was absolutely prohibited inside. In particular, visitors were forbidden from stepping on the stones that remain scattered across the site from the explosion, as well as touching or leaning against the walls or stones.

Normally, the building can only be viewed from behind the fence that surrounds its entire perimeter.
