Mali Rescues Four Moroccan Truck Drivers Kidnapped by Daesh*

The Moroccan drivers, initially kidnapped near the Niger-Burkina Faso border on January 18, appeared on national television with Mali's military leader, Assimi Goita.

The Malian government stated that the successful operation was a result of coordinated efforts between Malian and Moroccan intelligence agencies.

In late January, Niger's army reported finding four empty trucks belonging to the Moroccan drivers in Tera, a region frequently targeted by terrorist attacks.

The trucks were transporting equipment for the state-owned Nigerien Electricity Company and were reportedly traveling without security escorts at the time of the kidnapping.

Armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda* and Daesh have been active in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger for about a decade.
