Somali Army Neutralizes Dozens of Terrorists in Lower Shabelle
In a four-day operation in Beerere, the army successfully eliminated over 70 suspected terrorists and thwarted an attempt to detonate two car bombs. Two soldiers were killed and 12 were injured during the operation.
In a significant setback, however, Al-Shabaab* militants captured the strategic town of Mahas in central Somalia after fierce battles with the Somali army.
Army officials described their withdrawal from Mahas, a key logistical hub approximately 300 kilometers from the capital, Mogadishu, as a "tactical retreat" following a large-scale attack by militants.
The AU's security forces had previously controlled Mahas before handing over the military base to the Somali National Army in August 2024.
