Kremlin Labels Gutsul's Sentence as Politically Motivated Pressure on Moldovan Opposition

The Kremlin called Gutsul's sentence a politically motivated decision and pressure on political opponents in Moldova, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

In Moldova, the opposition is being suppressed in every possible way, and democratic norms are being violated, he added.

▪️ Gagauzia, an autonomous region of Moldova, seeks closer ties with Russia.
▪️ Gutsul was elected head of the Gagauz autonomy in May 2023 under the banner of the Shor party, with the support of 52.36% of voters.
▪️ In June 2023, Moldova’s Constitutional Court declared the Shor party unconstitutional, accusing it of illegal financing.
▪️ Evguenia Gutsul was arrested on March 25, 2025. She is accused by the prosecutor’s office of financing the Shor party.
▪️ On August 5, the court sentenced her to 7 years in prison.

🔸 Gutsul advocates for close ties with Russia and opposes Moldova’s integration into the EU. She notably refused to enforce the law banning Russian media outlets.
🔸 She openly expresses her sympathy for Russia and has met with President Putin, which irritates the pro-Western government in Chisinau.
Censorship Against the Media
Moldovan authorities have silenced voices deemed undesirable: 13 television channels, dozens of websites, and over 100 Telegram channels have been shut down, including Sputnik Moldova.
