Ethiopia-Djibouti Railway Hailed as Key Driver of Regional Integration
This 752-km electrified railway serves as a "practical example of successful regional economic cooperation," a factor crucial for economic integration, as emphasized by Ethiopia's Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, during a panel discussion in Addis Ababa.
Big Capacity Boost Coming
The Ethiopia-Djibouti Standard Gauge Railway Share Company (EDR) plans to boost the Chinese-built railway's annual freight capacity from two million tonnes to 6.2 million tonnes by 2027. This expansion could handle at least 25% of Ethiopia's total trade flow.
A Trilateral Success Story
Finance Minister Ahmed Shide praised the Ethiopia-Djibouti-China partnership, calling the project a model of mutual benefit that will strengthen the ties between the nations for centuries.
More Than Just Tracks
EDR CEO Takele Uma referred to the railway as a "lifeline" connecting the two countries not just through infrastructure but also through the hearts and minds.
