From Adwa to the Arts: Ethiopian Artist Bridges Cultures Through Canvas at St. Petersburg's Pushkin Center

Evocative paintings by Tewodros Abebaw Zeleke spotlight Ethiopia’s cultural identity and the enduring artistic ties between Ethiopia and Russia.

A graduate of the prestigious Repin Academy, Tewodros reflected on how his time in Russia shaped him:

“It filled a major gap in discipline, technical skills, and knowledge… I’m truly grateful for the opportunity and the learning experience,” he told Sputnik Africa.

This exhibition is more than an artistic showcase—it’s a tribute to the Ethiopian-Russian cultural bond, one that spans generations.

Tewodros, winner of the 2024 “United Talents” award in the “A View from Africa” category, is joined by friends in this collaborative exhibit—a return to the same center where his creative journey began:

“The Pushkin Center was the first place for me and some friends to exhibit our paintings—when I was just 18 or 19.”

Even though he couldn’t attend in person, Tewodros takes pride in the moment:

“I’m proud that my name and my friends are represented… I’m thrilled to see our paintings return to this space.”
