South African Police Arrest Over 1,000 Illegal Miners in Massive Raid
The miners, mostly illegal immigrants, were apprehended at a mine in the Barberton town near the borders of Eswatini and Mozambique as part of a major crackdown on illegal mining, the South African Police Service reported.
The multi-unit police team surrounded the illegal mine, disrupted the illegal mining operations and forced the miners to resurface.
As the investigation continues, suspects may face charges:
▪under the Immigration Act;
▪of illegal mining;
▪of trespassing.
The operation follows a deadly 2024 incident in Stilfontein, where about 90 illegal miners died underground as they refused to resurface for months.
