Federal Government Establishes North Eastern State in Somalia

"Preparations are underway for elections of the regional head and the state’s legislative body," the Somali Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation stated.

The new state includes regions disputed between Somaliland and Puntland. In response, Puntland's leadership has accused the federal government of attempting to divide the country and incite civil war.

This development comes after Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi offered to host a US Navy base in exchange for international recognition of Somaliland’s independence.

ℹ Although the international community recognizes Somaliland as part of Somalia, Somaliland declared unilateral independence in 1991. The newly formed state is strategically located near the Gulf of Aden.
