Horn of Africa is Continent's 'Most Tsunami-Prone Zone,' Guinean Geologist Says
A recent earthquake in Russia's Kamchatka and Sakhalin triggered multiple tsunamis — but did you know parts of Africa are also at risk?
"Countries like Somalia, Kenya, Mozambique, Madagascar, and Tanzania are particularly exposed," Billy Nankouman Cissoko told Sputnik Africa.
The East African coastline is a region of high continental seismic activity — though it experiences fewer massive undersea earthquakes, which is the main cause of devastating tsunamis, he explained.
Key factors worsening coastal vulnerability, according to the expert:
Rising sea levels;
Coastal erosion.
Still, the risk remains significantly lower than in global hotspots like Indonesia or Japan, the researcher pointed out.
