Total of 22 People Killed in Angola's Mass Protests Against Fuel Price Hike
What reportedly began as a taxi drivers' strike over fuel price hikes has turned into mass demonstrations across six provinces that lasted two days.
The outcomes of unrest, revealed by the interior minister at the Council of Ministers meeting:
one police officer on duty among the dead;
197 injured;
over 1,200 arrested;
worker mobility and economic productivity severely disrupted;
many shops vandalized or looted, 25 vehicles destroyed (including ambulances, buses, and public institution vehicles).
The protests — aggravated by the presence of "infiltrators with criminal intent" — have turned into "a threat to public safety and social peace," the presidency stated following the Council of Ministers meeting.
Meanwhile, public security and peace have been restored in the country's capital Luanda, according to the police.
