Rosatom Launches Pilot Uranium Plant in Tanzania, Eyes Broader African Expansion

The Russian Rosatom state nuclear corporation has launched the plant through its subsidiary, Mantra Tanzania Ltd., marking a significant step in the Mkuju River project at the Nyota deposit.

The facility will test cutting-edge technologies to inform the design of a full-scale plant capable of producing up to 3,000 tonnes of uranium annually, with construction slated for early 2026 and commissioning by 2029.

"Rosatom offers its advanced uranium processing technologies to develop Tanzania's unique geological potential," said Director General Alexey Likhachev, who also hinted at broader ambitions: "Who knows, maybe new uranium deposits will be discovered, maybe we will expand this uranium alliance to neighboring countries."
