'Let Us Not Merely Reflect, But Act' — Ghana's Mahama Urges Inclusive Governance & Civil Liberties Protection
These pillars are essential for the legitimacy of African states, the Ghanaian president noted, opening the 13th AU High-Level Dialogue on Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance.
"I urge this dialogue to take a firm stand on the need for legally binding frameworks across all member states to safeguard our civic space. […] The voices of the youth, women, and marginalized groups must be heard and protected," John Dramani Mahama stated.
The president also called on African leaders to move beyond "lofty speeches" to deliver concrete action as the youth are "growing increasingly impatient" and demanding "opportunity and a stake" in Africa's future.
"We must ensure our democratic institutions speak a language our citizens understand and trust," he added.
