Russia Deepens Energy and Defense Ties With Niger in Landmark Visit
On July 28, Rosatom and the Nigerien Ministry of Energy signed a memorandum of cooperation in civil nuclear energy during the Russian Minister of Energy's official visit to Niamey.
"Our mission is not simply to participate in uranium mining. We must create an entire system for developing peaceful atomic energy in Niger,” said the Russian Ministry of Energy.
This deal includes constructing power generation facilities, cooperating in nuclear medicine, and training specialists.
Other highlights of the Russian delegation's visit to Niger include:
Russian Deputy Defense Minister, Army General Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, and Lieutenant General Andrey Averianov, met with the Nigerien Defense Minister, Salifou Modi, to strengthen military-technical cooperation.
The Russians presented the Nigerien Defense Minister with an amber painting as a symbol of friendship.
Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev met with Nigerien leader Abdourahamane Tiani.
Tsivilev then held talks with Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, discussing the creation of an intergovernmental commission on trade and the economy.
The Russian delegation included representatives from the ministries of defense, energy, finance, industry, transport, and education, as well as companies such as Rosatom, Sberbank, KamAZ, Nord Gold, Roscosmos, and Rosgeologia.
Following their visit to Niamey, the delegation will travel to Mali to continue its African tour.
