Africa Needs to Combine Indigenous Knowledge With Technology to Achieve Food Sovereignty: Official

"We've been producing food to feed ourselves, but now things have evolved," South Africa's Deputy Director for Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Peter Ramolotja, told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the second UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake +4 (UNFSS+4), convened in Addis Ababa.

Ramolotja attributed Africa's current reliance on external food sources and the disruption of indigenous knowledge systems to the legacy of colonialism, advocating for agroecological processes that utilize local inputs rather than relying on imported fertilizers and cultivars.

He also highlighted the African Continental Free Trade Area as a crucial instrument for African development and self-reliance. "Africa is not trading with itself," Ramolotja observed.
