AU and Somali Forces Repel Terrorist Attack in Sabiid-Anole
Early Friday, al-Shabab militants launched a coordinated assault on military bases in the town of Sabiid-Anole, southwest of Mogadishu. The attack began with explosions and gunfire, but joint AU and Somali forces thwarted it, leading the militants to retreat.
According to the AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM),
several militants were killed;
others injured during the engagement;
various munitions seized.
Allied forces maintain control of the bases, which were liberated from al-Shabab in June. An ongoing military operation aims to apprehend the remaining fighters, the mission said.
This incident occurs as joint forces intensify operations to weaken al-Shabab in the southern region. Al-Shabab frequently targets military bases and government facilities in Somalia in its efforts to overthrow the internationally backed government.
