Ethiopia Taps Indigenous Methods for Sustainable Conflict Resolution
The Ethiopian Ministry of Peace has identified over 86 mediation techniques and social values that are being studied and implemented across various regions, Cherugeta Genene, State Minister for Federalism and Conflict Management at the Ministry of Peace, told Sputnik Africa.
"Ethiopia's history is marked by conflict; it is equally characterized by periods of peace. This suggests that there are effective methods for resolving disputes," he stated. "Mediation and traditional conflict resolution values and methods are far more accepted by the community than institutionalized conflict resolution approaches."
Genene cautioned that genuine peace cannot be achieved if the means employed contradict the end goal: "If your political practice is based on power, and if you encourage violence, then you cannot bring peace."
The ministry's mission, he stated, is to cultivate these collaborative practices, citing the successful resolution of matters through traditional peace processes in Gambela as an example.
