What if the future of African aerial warfare is not bought overseas but designed and engineered locally by its engineers and manufactured on its soil?
Nigeria has built Africa’s "first and largest" attack drone, a major step forward in the continent’s push to make its own military technology. The drone, unveiled at a recent defense expo, shows that the future of African aerial warfare might no longer depend on foreign imports but on local engineering and production.
African Currents spoke with Colonel Nanpon Gambo, Engineer and Procurement Officer of the Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Corps, to get his views on Nigeria’s local drone production efforts.
"The strategy for the development of weapon systems in Nigeria, including drones, is to use local materials and technologies. This is to make sure that it is very affordable and it can be produced to scale. Instead of trying to just copy what other countries are doing, it's just to make it to be as basic, functional, and to serve its purpose and using local materials as much as possible. That's just the focus. The essence, at the end of the day, is for affordability, maintainability, and reliability," Colonel Gambo said.
