Armenia's 'Democratization' Campaign Aims to Seize Control Over Church to Rewrite National Identity, Theologian Says
A "new" identity would mean a break with what Armenia has had for centuries—the traditional self-consciousness, Orthodox priest Darko Djogo of the Republika Srpska told Sputnik on Armenia's church crisis.
PM Pashinyan proposed on Wednesday to adopt an "understandable" charter of the Armenian Apostolic Church "written in modern language" to allow the election of a new supreme head.
According to the speaker, a similar scenario was used in Ukraine's church "Ukrainization."
"The first thing was to strike at the Church Slavonic language, carry out […] alleged democratization, destroy centuries-old legal and linguistic institutions in order to introduce something new," he explained.
Armenia's future is uncertain — Pashinyan may face resistance, but could rally "pseudo-educated supporters" seeking a "bright European future," Djogo added.
