Mozambique's Opposition Leader Faces Five Criminal Charges, Reports Say

Venancio Mondlane was charged by the Mozambican Prosecutor General's Office with five crimes in connection with the protests that took place in the country following the results of the presidential election, the Club of Mozambique news portal reported, citing Mondlane.
The general elections were held in Mozambique on October 9, 2024. Former independent presidential candidate Mondlane, who expressed disagreement with the results, called for mass protests.
The politician said that he would appear in court with an international team of lawyers, adding that his conscience is "clear," the report said.
At the end of March, the country's president, Daniel Chapo, and Mondlane had reportedly agreed to end the violence in the country, pay compensation to the families of citizens injured during the demonstrations, and pardon all detained demonstrators.
