How does one woman’s academic rise in a region where women rarely reach the upper echelons of academia spark a ripple effect across Nigeria and Africa’s healthcare and education systems?
At Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria—one of Africa’s most prestigious citadels of learning in Northern Nigeria—a historic milestone was achieved with the appointment of its first female professor of clinical pharmacy, breaking barriers in a field long dominated by men. Her journey, shaped by years of dedication to research, mentoring students, and advocating for mental health, represents both a personal triumph and a significant step forward for the university. African Currents interviewed the newly promoted Professor Hadiza Usman Ma'aji of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, ABU Zaria, Nigeria, to get her insights on breaking gender barriers in academia, and advancing clinical pharmacy education and research in Africa.Want to hear more from our guests? How does one woman’s academic rise in a region where women rarely reach the upper echelons of academia spark a ripple effect across Nigeria and Africa’s healthcare and education systems?

African Currents interviewed the newly promoted Professor Hadiza Usman Ma'aji of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, ABU Zaria, Nigeria, to get her insights on breaking gender barriers in academia, and advancing clinical pharmacy education and research in Africa.
"Gender does not define one's ability to excel in either science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or even the health sciences [...]. Inspiring more women to the field of pharmacy and sciences is a personal calling [...]. Clinical pharmacy research can help African policymakers design more effective, sustainable and patient-centered healthcare policies, ultimately improving medication access, medication safety and also health outcomes across the continent [...]. We should leverage also AI-based platforms to predict resistance pattern and optimize treatment," Professor Ma'aji noted.
