Tanzania' Geita Region Shines as Mineral Production Soars 50% in Four Years

Mineral output, including gold, surged from 18.21 tonnes in 2021 to over 27.4 tonnes in 2025, Geita Regional Commissioner Martine Shigela said.

"The mining sector plays a unique role in contributing to GDP growth, foreign exchange earnings, and overall economic growth," the official told a press briefing.

According to the commissioner, other key achievements in the region's mineral sector include:

Foreign exchange earnings from minerals rose from $72.9 million to $92.2 million;

Small-scale mining licenses surged from 903 to 9,774 (small-scale miners account for 40-50% of Tanzania's gold output);

The number of modern, mercury-free gold refining plants is set to increase from 10 to 23 by the end of 2025.
