Chess Tournament Celebrates International Chess Day at Russian House in Lusaka
Fifty Zambian chess players competed across five categories in a special tournament yesterday at the Russian House in Lusaka, held in honor of International Chess Day, July 20. The event also featured a photo exhibition highlighting the game's history.
"In Zambia, we have a free education policy and chess is one of the tools that we are using for enhancing education," Leslie Chikuse, head of the Zambian Chess Federation, told Sputnik Africa. "Chess is an important game because it speaks to real life, it speaks to discipline, it speaks to calculations, it speaks to patience, it speaks to priorities."
Chikuse praised Russia’s longstanding support of chess development in Zambia, noting that this collaboration enabled more than 50 Zambians to study in Russia through chess programs.
He also expressed his admiration for the greatest Russian chess champions, as well as interest in deepening ties with the Russian Chess Federation.
