African Union Welcomes DRC-M23 Peace Declaration
AU Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf hailed the agreement as a key breakthrough bringing "renewed hope for regional cooperation and sustainable peace" in the Great Lakes region.
Mediated by Qatar and the US, the declaration commits both sides to:
An immediate ceasefire;
Starting direct negotiations for a comprehensive peace deal within 10 days.
This Doha deal follows the June 27 DRC-Rwanda peace agreement signed in Washington, which included respecting borders and disarming rebels. A planned presidential summit in Washington this summer aims to finalize peace and potentially seal US-backed joint mining projects.
ℹ The conflict has involved the DRC accusing Rwanda of backing M23, while Rwanda accused Congo of harboring rebels attacking its territory.
