AU Hails CAR's Peace Agreement & Dissolution of Two Armed Groups as Step Towards Stability
The development follows an agreement signed on April 19. Last week, the Union for Peace in the Central African Republic and Return, Reclamation and Rehabilitation groups confirmed their commitment to disbanding and laying down their arms.
AU Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has urged all remaining armed groups in the CAR to follow suit and disarm.
The Central African Republic has experienced ongoing violence since 2013, sparked by a rebel overthrow that led to a prolonged civil conflict. While a peace agreement was signed in 2019, it ultimately failed, with major rebel groups resuming hostilities in 2021.
