Ghana to Hire 70,000 Health Workers as National Health Insurance Enrollment Hits 15.7 Million
This follows the recent hiring of 10,000 nurses and midwives, with further recruitment planned across all health sectors, Ghana’s Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh announced at the Government Accountability Series on Friday.
Simultaneously, pharmacists awaiting placement will see solutions: Salary arrears for 321 newly trained pharmacists are being processed, and 1,621 qualified pharmacists will be prioritized for permanent roles.
In health financing:
🟠The government fully cleared GH¢603 million ($57.9 million) in National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) arrears by December 2024.
🟠NHIS enrollment surged by 670,000 in 18 months, reaching 15.67 million Ghanaians – attributed to timely funding and reforms.
🟠GH¢1.38 billion ($132.4 million) was disbursed to healthcare providers in early 2025 alone.
Akandoh emphasized these steps as part of Ghana’s commitment to universal healthcare and a sustainable NHIS, noting, "No government has funded NHIS more promptly than this administration."
