Finance ministers and central bank governors from the G20 have gathered in Zimbali, KwaZulu-Natal, for a two-day meeting that began on Thursday. They will focus on key issues central to South Africa’s G20 presidency.
cross-border payments in Sub-Saharan Africa;
impediments to development and growth in Africa;
climate change and other issues.
"We must extend our efforts, if we are to reach our true potential as a collective, to enable us to deal decisively with the economic, environmental, developmental and social challenges that plague especially Africa," SA's Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said in his opening remarks.
Despite US tariff threats against BRICS nations over policies seen as "anti-American," such as using local currencies for trade, Africa continues to push for a unified payment system to boost regional trade, SA's Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago said.
"The African issues have been elevated, all of us are talking about those," Kganyago told a UK media outlet on the eve of the meeting.
