South Sudan Urges Removal of Sanctions & Arms Embargo to Advance Peace & Stability
"These measures have served their purpose; they now hinder our progress and security reform," President Salva Kiir said, opening the National Legislative Assembly.
Peace, security, and national unity remain top priorities, he noted, demanding all parties recommit to the 2018 peace agreement without preconditions to ensure free, fair, and credible elections in 2026.
"The doors of peace remain open," Kiir pointed out, urging rebel factions to reconcile. All opposition forces that support peace "must be welcomed and immediately integrated" into the army, he stressed.
Tensions between the government defense and rebel forces have escalated in February in the Upper Nile state.
The UNSC Sanctions Committee on South Sudan met in early July. Experts noted ongoing instability and clashes between the forces of the peace deal signatories. The council first imposed an arms embargo in 2018, extended annually due to concerns over government-opposition conflict.
