Erta Ale Erupts Again: Record Ash Cloud Over Ethiopia's Afar Region
Volcanic activity has surged once more at Erta Ale, confirmed by Samara University, Ethiopia, with a significant ash cloud now looming over the Afar region.

Here's a look back at some of the most notable eruptions from this geologically active area

Dabbahu Eruption (2005): Eruption began in September on a previously dormant stratovolcano, about 5 km NE of the summit. It marked a rare awakening of Dabbahu.
Manda Hararo Eruption (2007): In August, this massive shield volcano erupted, releasing lava from fissures and plumes of sulfur dioxide spotted by NASA. Manda Hararo is unique in that it erupts through side cracks rather than a central vent.
Fissure Eruption (2008): Afar’s rift valley, which spreads at 2 cm/year, triggered a fissure eruption, creating new lava flows. This is one of the few land-based spreading ridges on Earth, comparable to Iceland.
Dallol Eruption (2011): In January, locals reported dark smoke and ash, signaling possible degassing activity in this hydrothermal area.
Erta Ale Eruption (2017): Lava lake overflows in 2016–2017 led to a major 3-day eruption, flooding the caldera. A new fissure opened in January, draining the summit and causing crater collapses.
