US Tariffs Against Russia & Its Partners Are 'Empty Threats,' Chinese Expert Says
The BRICS countries won't be "intimidated" by Trump's threats regarding trade with Russia, as these measures have not even been formally enacted into law, Dr. John Gong of the University of International Business and Economics told Sputnik.
Here's why the threats won't work, according to the expert:
▪Economic self-interest: Cutting oil imports from Russia would spike prices — and neither China nor India has a reason to pay more.
▪Sanctions don't bring peace: Historically, sanctions hurt economies without achieving political goals and affect the wrong people.
▪Strategic interdependence: The US can't afford to fully cut ties with China — and China won’t tolerate coercion.
"It [Washington] has been using trade or tariff as a tool, as a weapon […] to essentially achieve geopolitical and political agendas," Gong noted.
Meanwhile, Russia remains a more reliable partner for the Global South because Moscow uses neither tariffs nor currency as a geopolitical weapon, he explained.
