On Tuesday, the Israeli government ordered an immediate military strike against Syrian forces in response to their actions against the Druze community in Suwayda.
Israel will step up attacks on Syrian pro-government forces if they do not leave the Druze community in the province of Suwayda alone and withdraw from the area in southern Syria, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Wednesday.
"The Syrian regime must leave the Druze in Suwayda alone and withdraw its forces. As we have made clear and warned, Israel will not abandon the Druze in Syria and will pursue a policy of demilitarization ... The IDF will continue to attack the regime forces until they withdraw from the area and will soon intensify its retaliatory measures against the regime if our signal is not heeded," Katz said in a statement.
At least 13 wounded in Israeli airstrikes in Damascus, Syrian health ministry reported.
He further warned that if the Syrian government does not cease its attacks on the Druze community in Suwayda, it will face "painful strikes."
"Warnings to Damascus are over - painful strikes will follow. The IDF will continue to use force in Suwayda until the armed forces attacking the Druze are completely eliminated and fully retreat," Katz added.
On Tuesday, the Syrian army and interior ministry deployed troops to Suwayda to clear the city of illegal armed factions. Later, they began withdrawing heavy military equipment from Suwayda toward Damascus, transferring residential areas under the control of internal security forces. The operation followed Sunday’s attack by armed groups on Druze villages, which also blocked the highway linking Suwayda to Damascus. The Israeli government ordered an immediate military strike against Syrian forces in response to their actions. Israel said it acted out of concern for the Druze community of Syria, citing close ties with the Druze population within Israel and historic connections.
