Clinical pharmacy research can ultimately boost access to safe, affordable medicines and improve health outcomes across the continent, said the first female professor of clinical pharmacy in Northern Nigeria.
Clinical pharmacy research is key to better healthcare in Africa, Dr. Hadiza Usman Ma'aji, Clinical Pharmacy lecturer and researcher at the Ahmadu Bello University, told Sputnik Africa.
It can help create "more effective, sustainable, and patient-centered healthcare policies," the speaker noted.
By studying drug use, bioequivalence, and antibiotic resistance, researchers can:
ensure cost-effective and evidence-based drug selection;
guide policies on combatting antimicrobial resistance;
update essential medicine lists;
improve drug safety.

Healing Nigeria: New Vision Combining Science & Tradition

Nigeria is already partnering with traditional healers to validate herbal medicines, ensure safety, and preserve African healing traditions, noted Ma'aji.
"This traditional medicine collaboration should come to stay, so that we will be able to actually monitor what is being given to the people in our society," she pointed out.
According to the professor, the new vision should also:
focus on high-burden diseases: HIV, malaria, TB, hypertension, diabetes;
ensure strong family and community involvement in treatment plans;
use modern technology, like telepharmacy, AI, and SMS reminders;
improve health literacy using local languages and visuals;
train pharmacists in rural pharmacy practice.
