AES Will Not Tolerate Impunity With Establishment of Sahelian Criminal & Human Rights Court, Malian Expert Says
The AES will be able to "strengthen its autonomy and sovereignty" and "respond based on the realities on the ground," Pan-Africanist and political analyst Agali Wele told Sputnik Africa, commenting on the creation of the Bamako-based criminal and human rights court.
"There are foreigners, including Westerners, present on our territory. If we judge these individuals ourselves, it will be more secure and reliable. […] If we don't act, some may be extradited and escape justice entirely, as many of them are on official missions," the speaker emphasized.
War crimes, crimes against humanity, terrorism, human rights violations — the court is expected to address all these issues.
"It's highly likely this court will spark new initiatives across the subregion, Africa, and even beyond," Wele suggested.
