Over 26,000 Mpox Cases Reported in Africa in 2025, With DRC Hit Hardest

Since January 1, 26,734 mpox cases have been reported across 21 African countries, with 115 deaths, according to the WHO via UN OCHA's Reliefweb.
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has seen the highest burden, with 13,545 confirmed cases and 38 deaths. Uganda and Sierra Leone follow, reporting 6,051 and 4,610 cases respectively.
While recent weeks show a decline in reported infections, especially in the DRC and Sierra Leone, the WHO warns these trends may be misleading due to testing delays and shrinking response resources.
The global health emergency status for mpox, lifted in May 2023, was reinstated in August 2024 amid a resurgence of the virus, which is endemic to Central and West Africa.
