The world's oldest serving head of state announced his decision to run for October 12 elections, eying his eighth term as the president of Cameroon since 1982, when he first came to power.
"Much remains to be done. In the face of an increasingly difficult international environment, the challenges facing us are more and more pressing. In such a situation, I cannot shirk my mission," Biya stated.
In 2008, Cameroon's constitution was amended, with term limits removed, allowing unlimited re-election.
Maurice Kamto (president of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement party, runner-up in the 2018 vote);
Joshua Osih (of the Social Democratic Front party);
Akere Muna (lawyer and activist);
Cabral Libii (of the Cameroon Party for National Reconciliation).
