Russia Unveils Key to Future of AgricultureGeneticists at the Russian Academy of Sciences discovered a method to enhance the productivity of crops like rice, the Russian Science Foundation told Sputnik. The breakthrough hinges on "jumping genes," or DNA segments, which play a crucial role in plant evolution and disease resistance. However, these genes often mutate and become difficult to detect over time. The scientists have developed a novel algorithm, far more advanced than existing tools. This algorithm identified 992,739 patterns across 79 families in the rice (Oryza sativa) genome — 56% more than those detected by the widely used EDTA algorithm. The next phase of this research involves establishing a global database of these genetic elements, making them accessible to the scientific community worldwide.

Geneticists at the Russian Academy of Sciences discovered a method to enhance the productivity of crops like rice, the Russian Science Foundation told Sputnik.
"Rice is the staple food of over a billion people. Developing new high-yielding varieties of this plant is an important nutritional task," explained Yevgeny Korotkov from the Academy of Sciences.
The next phase of this research involves establishing a global database of these genetic elements, making them accessible to the scientific community worldwide.
