Central African Republic Open to Russian Diamond Mining Firms
The full lifting of the diamond export embargo last year by the Kimberley Process has been highly beneficial for the CAR, the country's Minister of Trade and Industry, Thierry Patrick Akoloza, told Russian media.
"Because without sanctions, the country has the opportunity to develop and receive good dividends from selling its minerals," he stated, highlighting the economic potential this newfound freedom provides.
The Kimberley Process, an international certification scheme, removed all restrictions on diamond exports from the CAR on November 21, 2024. The embargo was initially imposed in 2013 due to conflict concerns.
A partial lifting occurred in 2016, allowing the country to export diamonds from five zones deemed conflict-free. The full removal of sanctions now paves the way for expanded mining operations and international partnerships.
