Uganda-DRC Bunagana Border Reopening Sparks Widespread Relief & Optimism: Local Media
Uganda's decision to reopen the vital trade route is being celebrated as a major step towards economic recovery and strengthened bilateral ties.
"Before the closure of the border, cross-border trade earned us money, but with the closure of the border, many of my friends abandoned their business for other adventures," Markshine Niyonzima, a local business operator, told local media.
In the same vein, cargo driver Twine Bob expressed profound relief, noting the Bunagana route's efficiency for transporting goods to Congolese towns like Goma.
"The financial struggles many families faced during the closure caused children to attend poorly funded schools," said shopkeeper Amina Ayesisiga, calling for government grants to help businesses regain stability.
The decision to reopen the route reportedly followed appeals from the affected community to President Museveni.
