Contradictions Between West & Russia Based on Geopolitical Interests, Putin Says
After the collapse of the USSR, the West brushed aside Moscow's strategic interests, seeking to impose its own rules, Putin told Russian media.
"The West decided: the Soviet Union doesn't exist, why should we follow the rules with Russia, which doesn't have the power potential of the USSR? Now we will forge our own path, as we see fit, and live by the rules we ourselves established, regardless of Russian interests," the Russian president explained.
But Russia understood that it would only be respected by asserting its sovereignty and its ability to defend its future, he added.
