Zimbabwe Poised for Milk Self-Sufficiency: State Media
Raw milk production has seen a significant rise, jumping from 66 million liters in 2017 to 115 million liters in 2024, a 74 percent increase.
This growth is supported by a 72 percent increase in the dairy herd over the same period. While aiming for 132 million liters this year, the sector faces challenges including feed costs, power outages, and the lingering effects of last year's drought.
However, initiatives to overcome these hurdles are underway, like:
improved breeding programs (artificial insemination, pregnancy diagnosis),
research into robotic milking systems,
farmer training programs.
The Zimbabwe Association of Dairy Farmers (ZADF) remains optimistic, attributing the recent gains to good rainfall and ongoing government support.
