Kenya's Former PM Calls for National Conclave to Address Challenges Amid Saba Saba Protests
Saba Saba "was not and is not just another routine street protest," Raila Odinga stated, adding that its ideals have become part of Kenya's national aspirations. "We are a better nation because Saba Saba happened," he stressed.
What are the ex-PM's proposals?
Convene "an inclusive, intergenerational national conclave" to identify key reforms and address corruption, impunity, and leadership accountability;
Ensure the conclave is led by credible leaders with clear guidelines, and put its outcomes to a public referendum;
Prioritize comprehensive police reforms focused on accountability, transparency, and better police-to-people relations;
Develop a strategy to tackle youth unemployment and expand opportunities.
Kenya's Deputy President Kithure Kindiki echoed Odinga's call for dialogue, urging citizens to resolve disputes peacefully. "We cannot build this country through chaos, incitement, or violence," local media quoted him as saying.
Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula criticized the opposition for lacking a clear agenda, accusing it of chanting slogans like "Ruto Must Go" and "One Term" without offering solutions.
On Monday, opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka called for broad participation in the Saba Saba protests, citing their historical roots and demanding that President Ruto serve only one term.
