BRICS Calls for 'Real Transformation' of Global Systems: South Africa’s Deputy Sherpa to BRICS
“BRICS has always been quite clear on the need to reform the multilateral systems of the world… to bring a real transformation to a system that was created 80 years ago whilst the world has changed in the meantime,” Ben Joubert told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of 17th BRICS summit in Brazil.
He also mentioned that BRICS aims to trade using their own currencies. Joubert explained that they believe their currencies float on international markets and that this approach could help save money.
Furthermore, he called the New Development Bank (NDB) BRICS’ “most significant achievement” that needs to expand.
Joubert highlighted the NDB’s growing membership – including Egypt, UAE, Bangladesh, Uruguay, and Algeria – and its expanding mandate to drive climate resilience projects across BRICS countries.
“Going forward, you will see those reports to summit becoming very much more detailed and very much positive in the sense that they make a good impact on the countries where those structures are working and operate,” he said.
South Africa's Sous Sherpa to BRICS further expressed that the BRICS bloc now consists of ten voices, indicating a diverse group. He believes that this diversity enhances the bloc's strength, although it may take longer to reach consensus. Joubert mentioned that this extended process is not necessarily a disadvantage.
According to the official, BRICS is ensuring that the Global South is “truly projected and heard.”

“BRICS advocates… we must support peaceful transitions where you have areas of conflict. And we will contribute to the ongoing process… to ensure that the voice of the Global South is truly projected and heard in those organizations,” Joubert reckoned.

He emphasized BRICS’ commitment to multilateral reform that is “truly inclusive of everyone, especially the Global South,” while acknowledging the UN as “the centerpiece of the multilateral system of the world.”
