16:23 07.07.2025 (Updated: 16:50 07.07.2025) What Are Kenyans Protesting Against? – Opposition Speaks Out
The ongoing protests mark Kenya's "Third Liberation," said Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the opposition party Wiper Democratic Movement. He recalled the earlier "Second Liberation" movement that eventually led to multiparty democracy.
Musyoka called for citizens to join the demonstrations "in resolute fearlessness and determination" to ensure President William Ruto serves only one term.
Meanwhile, Senator Okiya Omtatah Okoiti of Busia County accused Ruto of "sanctioning violence" against citizens.
"The president and his allies have openly justified lawlessness, legitimizing the use of violence against peaceful citizens and turning a blind eye to hired thugs who infiltrate lawful marches," the official claimed, referring to a group of women who were brutally attacked on Sunday by an armed gang after rallying support for the Saba Saba protests.
He urged Kenyans to "reclaim:"
The sovereign power of the people;
Justice and the rule of law;
Prosperity for the masses;
Constitutionalism, democratic rights, and fundamental freedoms.
