Tanzania Mandates $44 Travel Insurance for Foreign Visitors
The introduction of the travel insurance fee (paid in local currency) aims to strengthen traveler protections as Tanzania positions itself as East Africa’s premier destination, according to the Ministry of Finance.
The insurance covers:
Emergency medical care
Lost luggage compensation
Rescue services
Repatriation costs
Implementation awaits regulatory guidelines in the Government Gazette, with no confirmed start date.
Citizens from East African Community and Southern African Development Community member states will be fully exempt from the new insurance requirement.
The policy copies Zanzibar's 2024 insurance model, but tourism experts warn visitors combining mainland-Zanzibar trips risk double payments – threatening Tanzania's unified tourism branding.
