Sputnik Africa
As global demand for coffee continues to soar, African nations are no longer content with playing the role of raw material exporters. Instead, they are increasingly leveraging South–South cooperation, value addition, and collective market strategies to redefine their place in the global coffee industry.
This shift is not accidental. It reflects a deliberate continental movement towards processing more coffee locally, building stronger farmer cooperatives, and creating trade alliances across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The goal is clear: to reclaim value and assert African identity on coffee shelves worldwide.

Sharing his thoughts with Global South Pole, Dr. Frederick Kawuma, Secretary-General Emeritus of the Inter-African Coffee Organization, emphasized that African countries now understand that exporting unprocessed beans is a missed opportunity. He explained that while individual efforts matter, collective strategy and South–South collaboration are key to success in global markets.
“When we look at doing value addition at origin and presenting this coffee in those markets, it’s not as straightforward as it sounds […] If an African country thinks it will go and do it alone out there, it can be quite a challenge. You have big companies with deep pockets. So, we have to go into the area of collaboration because collaboration is critical,” Dr. Kawuma explained.
