Ghana Eyes BRICS Membership as MP Hails It 'Best Thing That Will Ever Happen'

As old Western-dominated power structures increasingly lose relevance, BRICS rises as a catalyst for change—driving inclusive growth, forging equal partnerships, and empowering nations to break free from imposed systems in pursuit of a just, multipolar world order.
For many nations across Africa, Latin America, and Asia, BRICS represents a viable alternative to the conditionality-laden structures of the IMF and World Bank. With its emphasis on fairer trade terms, local currency exchanges, and value-added development, BRICS is emerging as a beacon for countries seeking to break free from exploitative economic models.
This vision is at the heart of a compelling call by one of Ghana’s vocal MPs for the West African country to consider BRICS membership. He argues that the bloc’s approach to partnership—free from hegemonic impositions and neocolonial dictates—strongly aligns with Ghana’s aspirations for economic sovereignty, industrialization, and leadership in regional trade.
Furthermore, he emphasizes how BRICS complements Ghana’s longstanding non-aligned foreign policy while opening new pathways for inclusive growth, investment in value addition, and technology transfer. His appeal is not merely about shifting alliances; it is about reclaiming agency and shaping a future in which Ghana and other African nations are respected, not dictated to—where development is not prescribed, but built through equal partnership.
In a conversation with African Currents, Hon. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah—Ghana’s MP for Ho West and Chairman of the Energy Committee—outlined his reasons for urging BRICS membership and what he believes it could bring to Ghana’s economy and global standing.

"More of the Global South countries have decided to join BRICS. And we all know what BRICS stands for. We know that in the past, Western economies decided to take advantage of the less endowed countries where they decided to monetize everything that comes from our part of the world [...]. Then, dollarize or take everything to a particular currency. It makes trading very difficult with us down [Global] South. So, BRICS came on board and decided to change the narrative [...]. For instance, if I'm a member of BRICS and there is a trade negotiation between Ghana and Russia, I pay in [Ghanaian] cedi, and the money is taken in Russian rubles, not in dollars. This makes trading more competitive and interesting," Hon. Bedzrah noted.
