Africa Has Installed Record 4.5 GW of Hydropower Capacity in 2024, Up From 2 GW in 2023: Report
By the end of 2023, the continent's total installed hydropower capacity exceeded 47 GW, generating 167 TWh of electricity, according to the International Hydropower Association (IHA).
ℹ
- Africa's hydropower capacity is dominated by conventional dams (43.5 GW), with pumped storage plants (PSP) contributing an additional 3.7 GW.
- PSP facilities, which store energy by pumping water uphill for later turbine use, added 349 MW in 2024.
- Currently, hydropower generates 20% of Africa's total electricity.
Among major hydropower projects contributing to boosting capacity and launched in 2024 are:
🟠Julius Nyerere Dam in Tanzania (2,115 MW),
🟠Grand Renaissance Dam (GERD) in Ethiopia (increased by 800 MW with two new turbines),
🟠Karuma hydroelectric dam in Uganda (600 MW),
🟠Nachtigal project in Cameroon (420 MW).
