Ethiopian Surgeons Perform Country's First-Ever Dual Open-Heart Surgery on Single Patient
The open-heart surgery on an 82-year-old woman was conducted by a fully Ethiopian cardiac team, announced Dr. Fekede Agwar, who led the team.
The elderly woman is now in good health, the surgeon told a local news agency.
🫀During the seven-hour operation, the doctors:
🟠opened two blocked blood vessels, through bypass grafting of veins taken from the leg and chest into the heart;
🟠 replaced a damaged heart valve.
Despite concerns about the risks for a patient of this age, Fekede — who has performed over 800 cardiac surgeries in Ethiopia — said he believes people should live fully until the end.
