Transforming African Trade, Energy & Innovation: "Little by Little, Africa to Become Global Factory"
17:06 30.06.2025 (Updated: 17:41 30.06.2025) This episode of Pan-African Frequency explores how boosting intra-African trade, unlocking the continent's energy potential, and fostering collaboration can drive growth. This episode also covers Uganda’s 2025 National Science Week and key takeaways from SPIEF 2025 – offering insights on Africa’s evolving opportunities.
Professor Denis Deterev, chief researcher at the Institute of African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, explained that the energy sector is the basis for industrialization and economic sovereignty of African countries, speaking at the Russian International Affairs Council seminar.
If you don't have energy generation of your own, then it is very difficult to speak about your economic sovereignty. We discussed a lot on how much we should increase the capacity in energy generation of African countries. [...] Little by little, Africa will become a global factory. But for a global factory, you need energy,” professor Degterev pointed out.
Africa’s international trade relations were also discussed during the recently concluded St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The event gathered 21,800 participants from 139 countries as a key platform for global economic solutions. Sputnik Africa spoke with Ghana-Russia Center CEO John Aggrey about expanding Africa’s trade with Russia and other BRICS nations.
“BRICS is on a progressive trajectory because now most of the African countries are trying to do business with Russians in national currency, which is very good because that is what the BRICS is all about: de-dollarization, trading between your own foreign currencies, which is very good. So, I believe if we find the synergy between BRICS and the African [Continental] Free Trade [Area], Africa has a lot to gain,” he commented.
Africa’s pursuit of sovereignty extends beyond industrialization, energy, and trade—innovation must play a central role. This was exemplified at Uganda’s 2025 National Science Week (June 15-20), which showcased transformative local innovations with significant global potential.
A key highlight was the conversion of Uganda’s abundant banana resources—the country ranks as Africa’s largest producer—into sustainable textiles and high-value products. Twebaze Collins, the initiative’s founder, elaborated on how this innovation presents strategic investment opportunities for agricultural value chains across the continent.
"There is a lot to invest in banana value addition in Uganda. Actually, when you look at the value chain of bananas, we have, starting from the circles, then we go to the fruit, then we have the stem. We have so many products that come from each part of the banana plant. Investors have that opportunity to pick any part of this plant and invest in developing different products out of it,” the founder of the startup noted.
